Discourse is customisable and decentralised. You can make it look your own. You have unique accounts for each instance, no centralisation.
We use, and weāre not alone, Discourse hosted by https://discourse.org. It works quite well and with managed hosting I donāt have to worry about anything but the content.
The @Discourse app for iOS/iPadOS (the iPad app also runs on macOS) is awesome ā now I have (almost) all the support sites I frequent in one, logged-in place. cc @codinghorror (Those of you still using Discord: take heed! š)
I wanted to thank the discourse team for creating such an amazing product. I just updated two instances of the forum without a hitch. In fact, Iāve been using the software for years. And Iāve never had a failed upgrade. And when I need help the team is always available. So hats off to you guys!!!
@SergioRocks We ditched slack for @discourse in our remote async team. Havenāt looked back and the team loves it.
Discourse is fabulous. My company has used it for a customer forum for 7 years so Iām using it a couple of hours a day. Super happy with it. Though I would like to be able to mark a post as unread. šš¼

Main motivations:
- Open source, so we own it (weāre kinda big on this?)
- Format is better suited to large community who have a lot of questions

(And it feels unfair to call it āforum software,ā as that sells it short and lumps it into a class it has long since transcended.)

I have never seen software do such magic before. I had a dream, I fully realized it with a self-hosted Discourse instance, I invited my friends to come populate it, I created a story of why this should exist, and I put it out into the world, andā¦ people came. A lot of them. And theyāre staying and contributing. The place is alive. Itās for us. Itās ours. And itās all thanks to @Discourse.

I love that we have a Discourse forum for @hanami! Itās just an utterly delightful spot for considered dialog.

I understand some folks do discord but man ā¦ Iām sure happy that some places have a @discourse forum instead.
Iāve participated in a variety of different communities across several different platforms, but none have quite compared to my experience with discourse - which has offered the best online collaborative environment Iāve experienced to date. So this is a bit of a thank you for building a truly amazing forum service thatās allowed me to connect with amazing people in my community, and expand my skills at the same time. (Plus, smooth support for discourse on both desktop systems and mobile devices, which is appreciated so much!) šāØ
